Vince Gareffa – Prince of Tainted Horse Flesh

Mr Vince Gareffa of Mondo Butchers continues to sell Horse Meat in W.A and throughout Australia.

Vince Gareffa & the State Liberal Government - Cruelty for Dinner?

Although Vince has been quoted as saying “mentally I find it quite a hurdle” (selling Horse Meat), the butcher has urged Australians to open their minds, declaring the product is no different from the meat of other animals slaughtered for consumption.

“We’ve got so many horses running in the wild, and we kill camels, we kill kangaroos, we kill emus,” Mr Gareffa told AAP.

“There’s no way in the world it’s any different. It just does happens to be more emotional. (As pet) dogs become an emotional thing, horses are an emotional thing.

“But the cows, the sheep, the pigs, the chickens are sick of it. They’re sick of the racism against certain breeds of animal.”

Vinces lack of tact and mocking disregard for the bonds and connection thousands of Australians have with Horses as companion animals, is on display with that comment. He is of course, purely in this for profit – to the detriment of horses in our country.

In approving the slaughter of horses for human consumption in Australia, Agricultural Minister Mr Terry Redman attached conditions including the presence of a WA Meat Industry Authority inspector during processing.

According to the federal department of agriculture, between 30,000 and 40,000 horses are slaughtered every year for pet food and human consumption overseas. A reportedly 7 out of 10 horses butchered for their meat in Australia are racehorses.

In a letter by animal advocate Chantal Buslot of Belgium, she states:

Does Australia need to add horses to our plate? There is already a long list of animals that are exploited for their meat, and to add horses to this list for Australian consumption is immoral.

One of the major suppliers of horses for human consumption is the racing industry which breeds approx 30,000 horses each year. Approx 70% of these horses are simply not “good enough” and will be discarded without running a single race.

If Western Australia is to please minority groups; those Europeans who have a taste for horse flesh, will WA take the next step and cater for Asian cultures? Will the WA Government permit the slaughter of cats and dogs for their flesh? What is the difference between eating one pet and eating another? Horses are of course pets to many Australians.

Furthermore, you are all well aware of the toxicity of horse meat, poisoned with phenylbutazone, a banned substance in accordance with the Health of Animals Act and the Meat Inspection Act as described via other country parameters. Tainting the food supply with such toxins is not only negligent, but it is also immoral. It is also important to recognize that European markets are increasingly rejecting horse meat from Western countries where horses are routinely treated with such prohibited substances, and Australia will be a known target of such disapproval as well.

Horse Meat – It is a Night Mare for these creatures

From sale yard to transport to slaughter house – Horse Meat is CRUELTY on a plate. These animals suffer immensley. They are merely “pickings of the discarded and unwanted” – Horses who are no longer winning races, are not fit to breed, or have no homes to go to as there are simply too many horses in Australia as a result of this over supply.

Horse Meat is misery. Horses are flighty animals, they easily scare, they are large and strong and do not take well to transport, heavy handling (as is done in slaughterhouses to force them towards slaughter) and the eventual cruel end at slaughter.

Australians do not want to see Horse Meat on the menu – these animals are our companion animals, children’s pets, Policemens partners in protecting the community, therapy animals for disabled children.

Minister Terry Redman, Minister for Agriculture in W.A sees horses as merely a profit margin, another animal he can add to his portfolio of “industry” in Australia – and by granting ONE sole butcher a license to sell this meat – has condoned the cruelty suffered by these animals with no due process, consideration for their welfare or accountability to the public to ensure the safety of this meat.

Some may say Horse Slaughter is humane – however take some time to explore that for yourself. There is nothing humane about being injured or ill and being transported for days in cold or heat, frightened – to be deprived of food and water for extended periods prior to transport – to then your brutal death. Falling from a great height with a bullet wound to your head, or being stunned through your skull which often does not even work. This is the cruel reality that exists in this country – and we do this en mass to the very creatures who work to serve us and be our beloved companions. Where do we move the line in the sand to now?

Say NO to the sale of horse meat for human consumption in Australia Campaign update

Currently we are organising another demonstration in Perth and will release details once they have been confirmed. Back in July we stated up an online petition which has close to 5000 signatures, however these online petitions are not reputable or considered by the government when trying to amend laws or legislation so we are currently in the process of creating a petition that can be printed out, signed and sent back to us. If you are able to print off this petition, take it to your place of work, pony clubs or other areas to have it signed and then sent back to us to present to the government please email me urgently.

We will not give up this fight until the green light to sell horse meat for human consumption is over turned. There are too many inconsistencies within the Western Australian Government in regards to how quickly this was passed and approved and there are too many inconsistencies with how and where these horses are being slaughter, the process involved and whether or not it’s being monitored by the DPI and the process humane.

The horse slaughter industry in Australia is very quiet and relatively unregulated. The RSPCA have a policy in regards to humane killing which states “An animal must be either killed instantly or instantaneously rendered insensible to pain until death supervenes” however, we have a USA study that was conducted which proves that the captive bolt is an inhumane process for killing horses due to the structure of their skull. The captive bolt does not kill instantly or instantaneously and cause the horse extreme pain before death. I have been informed by the Western Australia Government that they will not take into consideration the USA study because it was not conducted on Australian soil even though the process is exactly the same. The RSPCA have another policy which states “Handling of animals prior to killing must also be humane and as stress-free as possible” however, these animals are subject to long sometime interstate transporting to one of the two licensed abattoirs in Australia who kill horses for human consumption without rest, food or water, not to mention the state of the horses in sale yards, the transportation issues and treatment in knackery’s of horses killed for pet food (but this is a different issue). In Western Australia there is no licensed abattoir for slaughtering horses for human consumption and no details have been confirmed on where these animals are being killed, however we have been informed that they are being killed in a knackery licensed to slaughter for pet food but we have been unable to confirm this.

At present we are not trying to have horse slaughter banned completely, there are many more issues that need to be addressed before that could ever happen, such as over breeding etc. We are trying to clean up an unregulated industry that has no concern for the welfare of these animals, and in most cased violates the Animal Welfare Act (or its equivalent), but our first step is to have this green light to sell horse meat for human consumption in Australia over turned. We need to be the voice for the horses that have no voice.

Please download our PETITION which will be tabled in Parliament and will have to be responded to by the State Government. Please email this to as many people as you can and ask they get one page completed and mailed back to the return PO Box.

And if you are in Perth please come along to our next demonstration, it only takes a few hours to make a difference. Details will follow.
